Putnam County in New York has been ranked as the ninth most desirable county to live in the state according to Niche's 2025 list. The county received an overall grade of 'A' and scored high in categories such as public schools, nightlife, and suitability for families. Westchester County was ranked second, while neighboring Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Columbia, and Ulster counties also made it to the top 20 percent of the list. Nassau County on Long Island was named the best county in New York for living, working, and raising a family.
