Former Golf Courses Are Going Wild

In Clear Lake, Texas, a former golf course has been transformed into a 200-acre nature reserve called Exploration Green, featuring five interconnected lakes that serve as stormwater infrastructure. The project, completed in 2023, includes walking trails, native plant species, and a bird habitat island. Similar rewilding efforts are taking place at other abandoned golf courses across the U.S., as the sport's popularity declines. These projects provide valuable open space for communities and opportunities for nature to thrive, despite the challenges of restoring contaminated land and managing costs.
