Northern Dutchess Hospital earns Leapfrog Top Hospital Award for outstanding quality and safety

Northern Dutchess Hospital is one of six hospitals in New York to receive a Top Hospital award.

RHINEBECK, NY, December 23, 2024 — Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Northern Dutchess Hospital was named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Top Teaching Hospital,” said Dr. Hossam Hafez, medical director of the Nuvance Health Family Medicine Residency program. “This award reflects the dedication of our faculty, residents and staff who work tirelessly to provide outstanding care while educating the next generation of physicians.”

Nearly 2,400 hospitals were considered for the award. A total of 134 Top Hospitals were selected, including:

• 8 Top Children’s

• 36 Top General

• 15 Top Rural

• 75 Top Teaching

Last month, Northern Dutchess Hospital was recognized by The Leapfrog Group for achieving an ‘A’ grade for exceptional quality and patient safety, among four other Nuvance Health hospitals.

Earlier this year, Northern Dutchess Hospital was one of 10 hospitals in New York to earn a five-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), scoring the highest level of recognition for quality of patient care.

The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“This award affirms our relentless pursuit of quality, safety and innovation in healthcare,” said Dr. Andy Wilson, Northern Dutchess Hospital’s vice president of medical affairs. Being named a Top Teaching Hospital by Leapfrog honors our hospital’s dedication to exceptional patient care while training future healthcare professionals.”

“Protecting patients from preventable harm is central to The Leapfrog Group’s mission,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Northern Dutchess Hospital has set the standard for patient safety, earning the prestigious distinction of a Top Hospital. This elite honor reflects the exceptional efforts of the entire team and places Northern Dutchess Hospital among the nation’s elite in healthcare. Congratulations to all who made this remarkable achievement possible.”

To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety and achieve top performance in their category.
